Echos
from the press: Must these gentlemen introduce themselves? They don’t really have to in the north of Germany. From Northsea coast down to “Kasseler Berge“ from “Münsterland“ over to the Polish border, there isn’t anywhere on their musical crusade that SIXTYFIVE CADILLAC hasn’t converted to the blues. The band based in Fallingbostel has been on a special mission for the last ten years. Really it’s quite clear as soon as “65“ appears on stage: the singers’ oufits don’t leave any doubts which type of mission they’re on. Black hats, black suits, black sunglasses and impressive expressions, not only do the Blues Brothers fans know which direction the ten strong band is going to go. But, the simple covering of old classics is not what “65“ is all about - of which they are proud. That would be too easy. This North-German-Live-Wonder plays another league: that’s high performance sport! that’s action! that’s speed! The group has an open mind for all kinds of music. The band is playing songs from the Blues Brothers; Jimi Hendrix; the Beatles and soulhits from the sixties, but arrange them differently. “Are these oldies?“ is what the band is asked after a concert. All members of the band are originally from differnet musical directions: from jazz to funk, from punk to heavy metal; from reggae to classical. Origins which SIXTYFIVE CADILLAC doesn’t supress but develop. The result being the hottest and fastest live act from north of Germany. “We don’t want to sound authentically old, we’re looking for a modern and personal sound.“ No doubt, it works! Harder! Quicker! Wilder! An evening with the boys is not a simple concert. You’ll find entertainment, energy , adrenalin and a huge slice of humour. “65“ have practised this recipe for success and the result is always sweaty, close to breaking – but holding on - enthusiatic fans. Then, why should the public give any less than the band itself? And they give their all by every performance, you can be sure of that! After ten years of on stage experience, professionalism is not left out: take a look on the guestbook on the net (www.sixtyfive-cadillac.de), a concert the coolest blues band east of Chicago is impressive. “When are you coming to our town again?“ is often written after a concert. “Like Jake and Elwood, only better!“ say the fans. Isn’t that a compliment?
SIXTYFIVE CADILLAC; HIGH ENERGY SOUL SHOW Present
line-up: The
original SIXTYFIVE CADILLAC was a band with the same name, based around
guitarist Steve P. Wieters und Steve Reighley, trumpet, which was mainly
made up from British army musicians between 1987 and 1989. The rhythm
section came from the group PAHALA II from Fallingbostel. In 1989 they
split because the majority of the band was posted back to England. Lead-singer Norbert Ohrt was found at a session with Wolfgang Grasekamp – later became the keyboard player for irish folkrockstar Hazel O’Connor. Junior lead singer Heiko Ebeling was asked to join the band on the day of the first rehearsal, after Walter had witnessed him – during a wild disco night – singing louder than the music. Trombone player Stefan Golinski came via different routes from the College of Art and Music in Hannover to Fallingbostel and quickly began to arrange the brass parts. Guitar player Andy Kammer was busy in Cologne with a Wolf Maahn production when the blues called him to Fallingbostel. The original tenor sax player Dirk Riedstra, all the way from Netherlands saw to the graphic design. First rehearsals started in June 1990 and on the 25th August, the group played their first concert for over a 500 fans in legendary “Welcome“- club in Hützel north of Soltau, North Germany. 10 musicians on stage, a brilliant Blues Brothers show ; three hours of power concert which was rare for bands in the 1990’s. News travelled fast and suddenly SIXTYFIVE CADILLAC had to do a lot. One year later they appeared together with the “kleinen Tierfreund“, Radio FFN and in TV –talkshow “Up`n Swutsch“ from Radio Bremen. After that, over four hundred concerts and numerous radio – and TV appearances have followed. The band is famous across the country: as far as Wiesbaden in the south to Husum in the north and have been heard everywhere between Aachen in the west and Cottbus in the east. They played in clubs like “Capitol“ in Hannover, “Musichall“ in Worpswede and “Bluesgarage“ in Isernhagen; all the big events and festivals in north Germany: “Hafengeburtstag“ in Hamburg, “Altstadtfest“ in Göttingen, “Theatrium“ in Wiebaden, the world exhibition “EXPO“ and computer fair “Cebit“ in Hannover; international Jazz & Blues Festival in Balver Höhle near Iserlohn, and eight times they played the finale of “Tag der Niedersachsen“ organised by Lower Saxony County music commitee. SIXTYFIVE CADILLAC has performed with showbusiness acts ie: Trini Lopez, Jennifer Rush, Django Edwards, Supercharge, Spencer Davis Group, Roger Chapman, Right Said Fred, Guano Apes, Fury In The Slaughterhouse, Sportfreunde Stiller, The Bates, The Rattles, Inga Rumpf and Frumpy, also Bro’Sis, Roberto Blanco, Drafi Deutscher and Atze Schröder; to name a few. Bandleader Walter Kohn has a very open concept to the music: SIXTYFIVE CADILLAC is playing the songs of the Blues Brothers; the Beatles; Jimi Hendrix and the soulhits from the sixties, but they always rearrange them. “We don’t want the sound authentically old but consciously look for a separate up-to-date sound of our own. Half of the band is in their mid-twenties, which is very profitable. The younger musicians are invited to help with the many arrangements, which are combined with the ideas of the older members – who have totally different backgrounds. Damian ( keyboards ) help with the notation to form something brand new. “Are those really oldies?“ a nineteen year old member of a Hamburg PA company asked after listening to a concert, “that’s blues-punk“ exclaimed others from Kassel. Two responses that SIXYTFIVE CADILLAC take as huge compliments. The musicians aren’t just active with 65. They worked together with ie: Chris deBurgh ; Peter Herbolzheimer; the electronic pioneer Klaus Schulze; London Philharmonics; Eddie Palmieri; Petula Clarke; Gitte Haenning; the avant-garde bassist Peter Sonntag; the Hanover Dance Theater ensemble; the national youth jazz orchestra; the musical-ensemble from “Thing Fish“ by Frank Zappa and the Harald Schmidt show. There are also two graduates of the Paul McCartney founded Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. A huge support up from the early days is given to the band by Germany’s most experienced road-crew: Gottfried Schneider ( ex-Klaus Lages Sons of Inspiration), Bernd Schuster and Jona Tietjen. The technicians look after a self-owned 2x3kw powerful PA, numerous lights and check a 24-track analog studio is always in working order in their rehearsal room. List
of musicians that were members of the group during the last 14 years: All translations by Clive Ford, Fischerhude, bassplayer with “The Spriggans“ and “Cladatje“, Press . . .
